If you are looking to start your doula business or expand your client base, having a Facebook page for yourself is a fantastic way to start.
We have heard some confusion from several Doula’s about how to actually go about doing this, so here is an easy, step-by-step, with pictures, explanation of how to go about this.
Firstly, you need to have a personal profile. If you already have one, great, you are on your way. If not, go to www.facebook.com and join. It only takes a couple of seconds, and is very easy to do. Once you have that set up, you will find yourself on your Home/Newsfeed page.
On the top right of the page, you will see a small arrow pointing downwards, click on that and it will bring up a list of options, including “Create Page”. Select “Create Page”.
You will then be brought to a page with several options as to what type of page you would like to open. For my personal doula page, I have selected “Local Business or Place”. You are welcome to chose any of the options you see fit, but I personally found this most suitable as it had the option for “Professional Services”. Fill out the information requested, and click “Get Started”.
If you are not comfortable putting your personal address, you are able to simply write the name of a street near you. See the following photo example.
You will then be asked to write a little bit about your business and create a individualized Facebook webpage address for your page. Make your page address SHORT & SIMPLE. Your name or your business name is perfect. It is easy for clients or potential clients to find, and for you to remember. For your brief explanation of your page, it is a good idea to include who you have trained/are training with and any other qualifications you have. For example;
Courtney Parker is currently completing her certification as a Labour Doula through the Nesting Instinct and has completed training with Full Circle Placenta for Placenta Encapsulation “
Again, short and simple. You will have the space to write your goals, philosophies, beliefs etc in full at another point in creating your page.
Follow the prompts, “skip” anything you do not want to do – ie make an advertisement (you can do this later when your page is established as it costs money).
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU NOW HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE FOR YOUR DOULA BUSINESS!
Facebook will now take you on a little guided tour of how to use your page and how to finish adding your details. Follow the prompts to complete your page, and then start inviting your “friends” to like your page!
Adding your own personal touches and making your page visually appealing is important. I would like to stress again, SIMPLE. You should try to make your page somewhat uniform by picking a general colour scheme or “feel”. If you have a logo, use it for your cover photo, display photo, or both! Head shots also make a great display picture, just be sure it is a picture you are happy with and plan on sticking with for some time as people will see your display photo on every post, comment and “like” you do and will come to know you by that specific photo. Cover photo’s are easier to change more often as they are only seen when a person is actually on your page.
There are some great sites you can use to create cover pictures for your page as well as other graphics. Two popular ones are Canva (www.canva.com) and Infographics (https://infogr.am/). When you create your images be sure to stick with your chosen colour/theme/feel of your page.
Once you start getting some “likes” on your page, it is important to keep up your traffic (people visiting your page). The more people click on your posts or links, the more their friends will see your page as well, thus creating the potential for more traffic, more likes, more clients for your business. Try to post at least once a day, but also be wary of posting too much – people often “unlike” pages for filling up their newsfeed constantly.
Look up other pages similar to your own or pages clients of yours would be likely to visit – baby wearing pages, birth support, other doula pages, birth photographers, baby accessories, hypnobirthing, parenting pages … the possibilities are endless. Being active on these pages by leaving comments, “liking” and “sharing” links will keep your name on their pages as well, which again, will increase your traffic, creating the potential for more clients fo you.
I hope this helps anyone who has been intimidated to start their own page, or has given some ideas to those of you not quite sure what to do with your page! Please feel free to leave any questions or comments if there is something that I did not cover that you would like some more information or tips for!
~Peace be with you,
