Amanda Schnarr & Jessica Wojtkowiak are IPPA Certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialists: They offer a variety of techniques for preserving your placenta – either for the purposes of ingestion (placentophagy) or for art. The placenta is an organ that is rich in estrogen and progesterone, which Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches can provide energy, restore hormone levels after childbirth, reduce hemorrhaging, enhance breastmilk production, strengthen the immune system, normalize blood hemoglobin levels and prevent or reduce symptoms of postpartum depression. Most mammals – including herbivores – eat their placentas as a natural part of the birthing process but with some cultural exceptions, placentophagy has fallen out of practice with humans. Increasing awareness of the potential benefits of ingesting placenta has resulted in more and more mothers opting to harness the nutritional benefits of placentophagy.
At The Nesting Instinct, we offer several options for individuals interested in placentophagy:
If placentophagy is not for you, there are still ways that you can honour your placenta! It is possible to create a keepsake print of your placenta using blood, ink or paint and high quality art paper. The shape of each placenta is unique and the veins create a beautiful tree-like design (often referred to as the “Tree of Life”). This is truly a wonderful keepsake for a baby book or even to frame and amaze your friends! Please note that in the interest of good health, a placenta that has been painted or inked cannot be consumed, although I can use food dyes if you would like to have colourful prints AND encapsulate your placenta.
